Shanghai at Night
This painting depicts a night-time view of the Shanghai 'Bund', a waterfront area which is a protected historical district in central Shanghai.
I visited Shanghai in 2013 after exhibiting my paintings in an exhibition in a nearby city, Suzhou.
I was inspired by the amazing, vibrant colours of the cities at night, especially the reflections of lights on bodies of water at night.
This work is painted in a loose style with simple, expressive brushstrokes, which capture the flickering lights of a city at night and emphasise the contrasting colours.
